Ajax offers £19million to sign Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey

Ajax has offered £19 million plus add-ons to take over Super Eagles of Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey from Rangers.

Bassey has been drafted by Ajax to replace Lisandro Martinez who will join Manchester United for £46 million.

Rangers are keen to keep Bassey after his stellar breakout season and have put a £25million price tag on the player.

Coach Alfred Schreuder identified Bassey as his preferred replacement for Martinez, with one report in the Netherlands claiming they had already spoken by phone.

The versatile defender is also attracting interest from Serie A and the Bundesliga, with at least seven teams following the 22-year-old.

The defender, who has a two-year contract left, made 50 appearances in all competitions last season and was named in the Europa League team of the season after the club ran to the final.

He also played a key role when Rangers won the Scottish Cup in May, contributing to the Scottish Premiership title he won the previous campaign.
