Alan Carr says his comedy probably stopped him with a breakdown while he was faced with enormous uncertainty in his life.

Chatty Man Alan faced an extremely difficult year as his marriage broke up and his beloved dog died.

The 46-year-old comedian announced in early 2022 that he and husband Paul Drayton were splitting, which understandably devastated both.

They were married for three years, but together for a total of 13 years.

Now Alan has opened up about how he got through this difficult period, which also saw his beloved dog Bev dies in Maya few short months after the divorce.

He told the Daily Mail Weekend magazine that everything at home was “changing,” describing his marriage as falling apart “the tectonic plates of my relationship were shifting.”

“Then Bev slowly faded,” he added, remembering his older dog.

Comedy helped him through the darkest moments, but Alan admitted that at times he felt like he “couldn’t get on stage.”

But, he said, there was always “extra cheer” from the audience, which the comedian “needed.”

Alan insisted he “didn’t have a breakdown,” but probably only because he had comedy as an outlet.

“Comedy probably kept me from collapsing,” he said.

Alan had previously called comedy his ‘therapy’ after his breakup with Paul, telling Lorraine Kelly: ‘I wrote the tour and then our marriage broke down during Covid, because it was so stressful and all.

“It’s quite emotional, uplifting and it was basically my therapy.”

In the same conversation with the Daily Mail, Alan revealed that Paul took the dogs with him because the comedian is away so often.

And Alan says he’d rather work constantly than return to an empty house.

He said, “People have said to me, ‘Alan, you have to go home at some point.”

“But Paul isn’t here, the dogs aren’t here, so I know I’m coming home to an empty house.”

He admitted that when he goes home he feels ‘lonely’.

After the couple split, Alan has since… hired a personal trainerand joked about wanting a revenge body.

In conversation with fitness guru guest Joe Wicks on Life is a Beach PodcastAlan joked: ‘I just got through a divorce so I told the trainer I want a revenge body.

“But I think he thought I said I wanted a blank body.”
