Alan Scheerder has hit Manchester United for allowing news from Erik ten Hag's impending resignation leaks out on the eve of the FA Cup last.

The Dutchman is about to take charge of the Red Devils for the last time this afternoon and will not be granted a third term at the helm, regardless of whether his side beat Manchester City at Wembley or not.

United are said to have already drawn up a shortlist of candidates to replace Ten Hag with that of Ipswich Town Kieran McKenna is among the favorites to take over.

After overseeing a terrible campaign with some record-breaking lowsUnited's key decision makers will argue that ending Ten Hag's reign is justified.

However, Shearer has questioned the timing of the speculation and believes Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his fellow board members acted with a lack of class.

The former England captain told the BBC: 'I think he has been treated disrespectfully. I think it went wrong.

'I think the silence is deafening from the owners of this great company, who are brilliant at business and who have put all the top executives in different positions.

'But no one has said anything about his work, whether it is safe or not. I think from a human point of view it's wrong.'

Despite appearing to have his fate sealed, Ten Hag came out fighting in an interview with Voetbal International on Friday, claiming he still expected to be given the chance to take United further next season.

He said: “They said they want to change everything and that they want to rebuild together with me,” Ten Hag told the Dutch newspaper Football International. “This is what they told me directly.

'Let me be clear. It's been bad. It's been nonsense. But despite everything, we are going to play an FA Cup final.'

Ten Hag then hit back at pundits who have called for his sacking or who have been overly critical of Manchester United, claiming they see the fallen giants as 'easy prey'.

“The experts in England want to score, they want to show they are worth the money and for that Manchester United are easy prey,” the 54-year-old added.

'It is the biggest club in England and possibly in the world. The club is loved or hated, there is no in between. So when things go bad, they all start talking and using really big words.

“All this negativism from these so-called experts who do not have the ability to analyze anything with facts, but prefer to attack people to make themselves look better.
