Alicia Vikander has opened up on her experience with miscarriage, reflecting on how it affected her after portraying a character that suffered two pregnancy losses in The Light Between Oceans.
The actress, who married fellow performer Michael Fassbender after first meeting on the set of that film in 2014, welcomed a 17-month-old baby son last year.
However, in April she revealed that the couple had suffered a miscarriage ahead of the birth of their son.
The 33-year-old has now said the experience gave ‘another meaning’ to the period-set movie, in which she and Michael played a couple who find a baby lost at sea after going through two miscarriages.
In a new interview, the Oscar-winner, who is known for being private about her personal life with Michael, gave new insight into her heartbreaking experience, admitting: ‘We have a child now, but it took us time.’
‘Talk about meta,’ she told The Sunday Times. ‘[The miscarriage] was so extreme, painful to go through and, of course, it made me recall making that film. That film has another meaning now.’
Alicia’s latest project is HBO limited series Irma Vep, Olivier Assayas’ remake of his 1996 film with Maggie Cheung about a French auteur remaking the French silent serial Les Vampires with disillusioned American actress, Mira Harberg.
Miscarriage is also tackled here, as the storyline includes a pop star who suffers a miscarriage but is still told to perform that same night.
The Danish Girl star also offered her thoughts on the ‘double life’ of people in the public eye going through private problems and grief.
Reflecting on being able to ‘step away for a bit’ from an office job during a tough time, she explained: ‘There are times that myself or colleagues have been through something and, well, I can’t understand how they went on to the red carpet afterwards.
‘To be met by people asking, “How are you doing?” Given what they had just been through? Most people would not be able to step out of their house.’
Alicia, who lives in Lisbon, Portugal with her ‘tiny family’, tied the knot with Michael in 2017.
She initially spoke about her miscarriage in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, sharing that the pregnancy loss had made her realise how much she wanted to be a mother after initially being ambivalent until the age of 30.
Hesitant to reveal her personal experience, the actress said she had ‘tried to get pregnant for a while’ and ‘struggled’ through some ‘tough times during lockdown’. ‘But I think it’s universal and so many women go through similar things. And it’s tough,’ she stated.
