Andy Goram: Rangers pay tribute to Scottish football big after death from cancer at age 58

honor was brought to Andy Goram after the former goalkeeper’s death.

Rangers announced on Saturday (July 2) that the Ibrox legend died at the age of 58 after a brief battle with esophageal cancer, after announcing in May that he had only six months to live and the option of chemotherapy from refused, as it would only prolong his life by a matter of months.

Goram has also earned 43 senior international appearances for Scotland during a long football career spanning 23 years and has also played for Manchester United, Coventry, Sheffield United, Motherwell and Notts County, among others.

Goram started at Oldham, later returned to the club for a second time, and spent four years at Hibernian before joining Rangers in 1991.

He made a total of 260 appearances in Glasgow and won five domestic league titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups before leaving in 1998.

Goram – who also represented Scotland internationally as a cricketer – was previously named by fans as the greatest goalkeeper in Rangers’ history in 1999.

“Rangers Football Club today is deeply saddened to announce the death of our legendary goalkeeper, Andy Goram, after a brief battle with cancer,” Rangers said in an official club statement.

“The thoughts of the directors, management, players and staff are with Andy’s family today, and they ask that their privacy be respected in this sad time. Funeral details will be passed on in due course. ”

Further tributes to Goram have poured in from around the world of football and beyond, including from Scotland’s Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

She wrote on Twitter: “This is such terrible sad news. Andy Goram was one of Scotland’s all time great footballers. Far too soon gone. My condolences to his loved ones. “

Manchester United said: “We are saddened by the loss of our former goalkeeper, Andy Goram. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. ”

Gary Neville tweeted: “Terrible sad news about Andy Goram. RIP Andy. Love for all your family. ”

A message from the Scottish Football Association (SFA) reads: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the loss of legendary Scotland goalkeeper Andy Goram. “The thoughts of everyone at the Scottish FA are with Andy’s family and friends at this time.”

Former teammate Steve Archibald said: “RIP my dear friend Andy Goram (the goalkeeper)’s lightning fast reflexes, and always gave me maximum confidence to have him in goal, just had to marvel at many of the saves he made to to keep us in the game. Much love and my sincere condolences to all Andy’s family X. ”

Motherwell tweeted: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former captain Andy Goram. The thoughts and condolences of everyone at Motherwell FC are with Andy’s family and good friends during this very sad time. “
