Andy Murray hopes to return to Wimbledon next year, but admits top-level competition is now ‘extremely difficult’ after suffering serious injuries over the years.

The 35-year-old made his earliest ever exit at SW19 on Wednesday, crashing after beating John Isner on their second lap.

Murray has had two major hip surgeries to extend his time at the top of his sport and also suffered an abdominal injury this month while competing in the capital.

And while he plans to return in 2023 to take on a stronger challenge, the Scot admits his career is no longer able to make long-term predictions.

“Well,” Murray told reporters when asked if he wanted to go back to Wimbledon.

“I mean, it depends on how I’m physically, [if] physically I feel good, then we try to keep playing.

“But it’s extremely difficult with the problems I’ve had with my body over the past few years to make long-term predictions about what I’ll be like, even in a few weeks, let alone a year.”

“If I’m in a good place physically, yes, I’ll keep playing. But it is not easy to keep my body in optimal condition to compete at the highest level.’

Murray added: “It’s frustrating because I was in a good place with my game. The injury didn’t help. The positive is that I was physically fine during the matches (at Wimbledon). I just couldn’t win today.’

Murray followed Emma Raducanu from Wimbledon after the US Open champion suffered a straight sets defeat to Caroline Garcia.

Meanwhile, Cameron Norrie fought back to beat Jaume Munar in five sets to secure his place in the third round.
