A serving All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, Elisha Abbo, reportedly supported PDP senators’ move to impeach President Buhari for the alarming level of insecurity across the country.
According to Channels, Senator Abbo said in an interview with his TV station that he fully supports the impeachment proceedings against the president. He stated that the Nigerian leader has failed in his fundamental responsibility to safeguard people’s lives and property.
Recently, there have been reports of renewed attacks by terrorists and other armed non-state actors in various locations around the country, in some cases killing security agents.
On Wednesday, July 27, PDP senators went on strike after calling for President Buhari to be impeached.
Senate minority leader Senator Philip Aduda had put forward a point of order asking Senate President Ahmad Lawan to discuss the security situation in the country and the impeachment of President Buhari. But the Senate Speaker, who chaired the plenary, rejected the minority leader’s request, saying the point of order raised fell flat on his face.
Angered by the action of the Senate Speaker, all legislators elected on the platforms of all political parties other than the All Progressives Congress (APC) walked out of the legislative chamber while the plenary session was underway.
They later handed a six-week ultimatum to President Buhari to address the security challenges plaguing the country, saying they would launch impeachment proceedings against him if he does not address the issue within the period.
