apple is rumors to bring OLED displays to the iPad range in the coming years and while most reports have focused on the display technology, a new article from ETNews brings more details about the manufacture of the display panel of the next generation of tablets. Samsung and LG are touted as the top two screen suppliers, and both are said to be working on new OLED panels designed specifically for Apple’s upcoming 2024 iPads.

The new part of the fabrication process is dry etching – a process in which manufacturers use gas chemicals to remove unwanted layers of material from the surface of the TFT circuit pattern during fabrication. This process allows the OLED panel to be thinner and lighter and reduces the overall footprint of the tablets.

Apple is also developing a special coating for the display that will make the panel more durable. Apple is reportedly already testing the first prototype units of its OLED iPads internally.

Last report on the OLED iPad suggests that Apple will use double-stacked OLED displays that contain two layers of light-emitting diodes, which should result in increased brightness output.
