Auckland designer DuBois Design’s Natalie DuBois won the best bathroom in New Zealand in 2022 for the third time in a row. She also won the best kitchen and designer.
Dubois’ NKBA Excellence in Design Supreme Bathroom Design Award was awarded to a moody and textured guest bathroom, described by the judges as a play with clean curves and rough edgy elements.
Designers say the materials selected helped build a moody and intimate aesthetic.

This is Natalie du Bois’s best “dark and moody” bathroom, featuring an exposed “rock face”. The vanity top is Bengal Blackstone. The ditch creates a rock edge on the bench.

The Supreme Bathroom Design Runner-up was a bathroom by Tracy Murphy of Vekart in the Bay of Plenty.
This ensuite is designed for busy professional couples whose briefs are very simple – create a luxurious, moody and peaceful space after a long and busy work. Murphy said he needed something to relax with a glass of wine and enjoy the sea view.
“The curved walls of the shower match the other elements in the house and are tiled with small vertical marble finger-shaped tiles. Free-standing dark charcoal, concrete baths with tile shelves, gunmetal taps. The clothing adds a luxurious atmosphere.

Tracy Murphy of Vecart in the Bay of Plenty designed this luxurious bathroom. This luxurious bathroom features a stand-alone concrete bath with dark charcoal, tile shelves and gunmetal tapware.
The jury praised the curved walls and contours leading to the characteristic shower laid in a stunning arrangement of vertical finger tiles. “By combining these with soft, subdued tones, we grow up and create a luxurious bathroom space.
“The dark charcoal and gunmetal tapwear on the concrete bath contributes to the moody atmosphere of this relaxing space, which is ideally located for capturing seascapes.”
Three of the lead designers of this year’s NKBA National Awards, Natalie Dubois, Morgan Kronin and Tracy Murphy, have also won other project awards (see video).
