The BBC apologized yesterday after reports of a football ace charged with sex crimes – for a photo of an innocent Premier League star†
An image of Raheem Sterling27, stayed on screen as host Mike Bushel continued the unrelated story about another Prem star†
He appeared to have been stopped by a producer when he mentioned an unnamed player who had not been suspended despite being… arrested on suspicion of rape†
Sterling’s photo — in the news after his £50 million move from Manchester City until Chelsea — then it flashed off the screen, the BBC Sports title card back.
Directed by a producer through his earpiece, Bushell said of the rape story: “We don’t know the team, we don’t know the player†
BBC news quickly apologized in the air.
It said: “Due to a technical error, the wrong photo appeared in connection with the story of a Premier League player who was arrested for alleged sexual offences.
“A photo of another and totally disconnected player was shown. Our apologies.”
Last week we revealed that a player in his late twenties had been arrested in north London on suspicion of rape before being arrested again for two more alleged assaults on another woman.
The star, who must play at the World Cup in November, cannot be identified for legal reasons, but it is certainly not Sterling.
