BBC Radio 2 will not broadcast the offensive version of The Pogues’ classic Christmas carol, Fairytale of New York, two years after the station received backlash for it.

The original version of the celebratory song, released in 1987, contains a homophobic slur that has become increasingly controversial over the years.

In the text in question Kirsty MacColl sings: ‘You scumbag, you made, you cheap lousy f****t.’

Frontman Shane MacGowan also sings: ‘You’re an old slut on junk.’

In 2020, BBC Radio 1 announced his decision broadcast an alternate edition of the beloved Christmas carol so as not to offend younger listeners with its derogatory terms for gender and sexuality.

However, Radio 2 continued to play the unedited version, raising questions about the lack of consistency within the company.

The station has now shared an update ahead of this year’s Christmas season, in a statement to Metro.nlWe know the song is considered a Christmas classic and will continue to play it this year, with our radio stations choosing the version of the song most relevant to their audience.

“On Radio 2 we reflect what we hear from many of our listeners who love the song but find some of the lyrics shocking in 2022 and play an alternative version provided by the record company.”

Two years ago, the Beeb defended his decision to edit the track for Radio 1, which attracts a younger audience compared to its sister station.

A spokesman said at the time: ‘We know that Fairytale of New York is regarded as a Christmas classic and we will continue to play it on BBC Radio this year, with our stations choosing the version of the song most relevant to their audience.

“We are aware that young audiences are particularly sensitive to derogatory terms of gender and sexuality, and after careful consideration, Radio 1 have decided to play a version with Kirsty MacColl singing alternative lyrics, supplied by the record label.”

Pogues star Shane previously revealed how he felt about the edited lyrics, to Metro.co.uk: ‘I think it’s ridiculous.

‘I don’t hate Fairytale! I’m just a little sick of it.’
