Ever since Society was cruelly canceled after its first season, fans have been clamoring for a Society return – and our hopes could potentially be answered soon.
The beloved series premiered on Netflix in May 2019, and followed teenagers driven from their hometown during a school trip – and thrown into an identical version, without adult supervision.
They were forced to take matters into their own hands and created their own community, but things quickly spiraled out of control and degenerated into a Lord of the Flies-esque situation with an almighty cliffhanger.
Viewers watched in droves, with TV bosses initially renewing the show for a second season, but that did not happen ultimately canceled due to the global pandemicwhich leads to a huge backlash.
Five years later, Fans' calls for more episodes have not subsidedwith creator Christopher Keyser touched by the huge response – teasing that those behind the camera are always trying to think of ways to move the story forward.
In fact, we came very close to getting new installments in graphic novel form before the publishing house went bankrupt.
'This was not a normal cancellation. It wasn't about not having an audience or not believing in it anymore. There was a global crisis that changed our entire lives in the one year we were able to make it,” he pointed out Variety.
“I have consistent conversations with a number of writers and Marc Webb [executive producer] about how we can somehow bring this back. We don't have an answer yet, and I wouldn't count on it, but I don't do that with every show that gets canceled.
'The public still wants to talk about it. They are still affected by it and want answers to the questions and then new questions are asked. I just don't know if the world will work in a way that suits us, but we'll keep trying for a while, because it gets under my skin too.'
Kathryn Newton, Gideon Adlon, Olivia DeJonge, Toby Wallace and Jacques Colimon led the cast of young people as they desperately tried to understand their plight, and how their lives had changed in an instant.
The first series ended on a huge cliffhanger as viewers learned that the teenagers' parents were still alive and back to 'normality', believing that their children had somehow died.
We also had questions about where the school buses transporting the students actually went after disappearing into thin air, and whether the two timelines would ever merge again.
Netflix bosses announced the decision to cancel The Society – and I Am Not Okay With This – in August 2020, in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
“We have made the difficult decision not to move forward with the second season of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” they said at the time.
“We are disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances caused by Covid, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry of 21 Laps Entertainment for I'm Here not okay with that; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who have worked tirelessly to create these shows for our members around the world.”
While he remained coy about what might happen next – in case their plans for a revival or a graphic novel ever came to fruition, Christopher promised that they already had the storylines mapped out.
“It really feels like this thing that we loved and were ready for has been taken away more than anything I've ever done,” he added. 'That goes for the writers and for Marc Webb, with whom I made the show. There's a sense that it stopped halfway through the animation, but we knew a lot of what was going to happen on the other side.
“There's also an emotional thing going on, with the public reaching out to us and consistently saying, 'Tell me what happened. When will it come back?” It was particularly poignant for us because we were closer to preparation than I think for most shows.”
Right on cue, fans began parsing his comments on social media, begging Netflix to once again pick up more episodes for some much-needed “closure.”
On Twitter, Elise pleaded: “Bring back the entire cast and move on, we as a society will ignore the fact that they have aged.”
Ashley agreed, “OH MY GOD?! Please, I beg you, I have literally never wanted a show to return more than The Society. I need closure!!!'
“We've been robbed,” Kathy said angrily. “This show was extended and then canceled when it should have been postponed. We deserve another season.'
Nowwhyami_innit begged, “Even if it's one more season FINE! Just tell us what happened in that town.”
As Kat Pettibone added, “If I said I would sell my soul for this! It would be my greatest victory.”
Honestly, hard to be the same.
The Society is now streaming on Netflix.
