White has yet to make an appearance in Qatar and missed Tuesday night’s 3-0 Group B victory over Wales through illness.
It is too late for the Three Lions to name a replacement for the versatile centre-back, so Gareth Southgate is down to just 25 players for the remainder of the World Cup.
A statement released by England on Wednesday evening read: “Ben White has left England’s training base in Al Wakrah and has returned home for personal reasons.
“The Arsenal defender is not expected to return to the squad for the rest of the tournament.
“We ask that player privacy be respected at this time.”
