Biggest EuroMillions jackpot ever up for grabs, prize money reaches record €230 million

Friday’s EuroMillions jackpot is headed for a record €230 million, the largest prize pool in the game’s history.

The single winner of the EuroMillions jackpot in Ireland, or in any of the other eight participating European countries, officially becomes the biggest ever lottery winner in Europe.

Under the EuroMillions rules, the jackpot is capped at €230 million, and after this is reached, any excess normally allocated to the jackpot will flow into the next prize tier meaning more winners.

“Friday night’s EuroMillions draw is truly record breaking. The megajackpot on offer is quickly moving towards the €230 million jackpot and if Friday’s jackpot hits the cap, there could be bigger prize winners than usual at the next winning prize tier,” said a spokesperson for the National Lottery.

“The countdown has begun for Friday’s record-breaking draw of an estimated €230 million and we are calling on players to purchase their tickets in-store early, via the National Lottery app, before the 7.30pm ticket sales deadline on Friday evening.”

It has already been a record year for EuroMillions awards in Ireland. In 2022, the EuroMillions game has already created four new lottery millionaires, including a €30.9 million prize won last February by a Co Clare syndicate.

A further 12 players across the country have also won the EuroMillions Plus top prize of €500,000.

A family syndicate from North Co Dublin currently holds the record for winning the highest EuroMillions jackpot in Ireland after winning €175.4 million in February 2019.

This year, 16 Euro Millions top prizes have been won across Ireland, ranging from €500,000 to €31 million in Tipperary.

The operator of the separate Irish Lotto came under fire last year for failing to win the €19 million jackpot for seven months, with criticism that too many balls had been added to the game.

After the Lotto operator said that if the jackpot was not won on January 15th, the prize money would flow to the next set of prize winners, the jackpot finally fell and was sold in Laura’s XL shop in Castlebar.
