Black Cap Mitchell Santner’s departure to Ireland has been delayed due to contracting Covid-19.

New Zealand Cricket announced on Sunday that the spin bowling all-rounder would miss Sunday night’s flight after testing positive on Friday.

He was one of four players, along with Martin Guptill, Ish Sodhi and Adam Milne, to fly off the ODI three-game series in Malahide, which starts next Sunday night (NZ time).

Santner will still aim to join the squad for the first game of the series, pending negative tests later in the week.

The 30-year-old will then take over from Tom Latham as captain for the three T20s against Ireland, two T20s and ODI against Scotland and two T20s against the Netherlands.

Shane Jurgensen, who is the head coach for the Ireland tour while Gary Stead is taking a break, said Santner was experiencing mild symptoms and his availability for the series will be determined once he arrives in Dublin.

“Covid has been a challenge and will remain so in the future, and we will adapt accordingly, unforeseen circumstances are always present,” he said.

“He is feeling well and the priority will be hopefully to get him back into camp later in the week to assess where he is and when he is ready to play.

“We have 11 games over the three tours and another tour against the West Indies in August that Mitch will be involved in, so we certainly won’t be rushing him.”
