Boris Johnson in danger of coup by Tory rebels ‘can not get away from this’ | politics | News

Bait Boris Johnson attends Commonwealth leaders’ summit in Kigali, Rwanda, Tory rebels plan their next step to oust the Prime Minister. In the next four weeks, the Conservative Party will hold a secret ballot to elect the executive members of the 1922 committee – the parliamentary group of the Conservative Party – that will determine the political future of Boris Johnson. If enough Tory rebels get seats in the Committee, they can change party rules and scrap the 1-year limit to hold a new vote of confidence over the Prime Minister – which puts the Prime Minister in danger of taking his position for a second time to lose.

In a report from Kigali, Rwanda, Darren Mccaffrey’s political editor of GB News warns that Boris Johnson’s defeat in the by – elections followed by the resignation of Oliver Downer are bad signs for the prime minister.

He told GB News viewers: “Honestly, much of the political agenda is domestic and he can not get away from it, it’s about his own leadership. It’s about losing those two by – elections, and resigning from Oliver Downer.

“And we’re heard over the last few days from some Conservative MPs that they want to change the rules of the Conservative Party so that it can face another leadership challenge in the future.”

“Now that he has won that vote a few weeks ago, in theory, he is safe for another year. They are electing a new executive from the Conservative Party – the 1922 committee.”

According to the party’s current rules, Boris Johnson is technically safe until June 2023 after surviving a mistrust at the beginning of June. However, the incoming members of the 1922 committee could decide to change the rules and allow another vote to be held sooner.

Mr McCaffrey continued: “And there are suggestions that they might be able to get rid of that year period. But that comes because there is a bit of controversy here from Rwanda overnight as well. Boris Johnson spoke to me and other journalists yesterday.”
