Replacing Boris Johnson as prime minister must be done “properly and professionally, but quickly,” said newly appointed Education Secretary James Cleverly.
Mr Cleverly told Sky News: “I am concentrating and the government is concentrating on the future what is the right thing to do and the future is about making sure we have a new Prime Minister and a government team soon and carry on in the meantime to serve the British people.
“He will remain prime minister until a new prime minister is found. That’s how our system works.
“Everyone recognizes the incentive to do that well and professionally, but quickly, so that we can get some certainty and that the new Prime Minister, whoever that is, can build his team and make sure they stay focused on what really matters and that are the people of this land.”
