In an assassination attempt with echoes of Thatcher’s removal, Cabinet members saw him individually to demand that he stop.

A race to replace Mr Johnson as Tory leader and British Prime Minister is now set to begin.

Great conservative hitters like Rishi Sunak, Nadhim ZahawiLiz Truss, Sajid Javid and Jeremy Hunt all expected to have a tilt.

On a dramatic day in Westminster

  • A “Quit Squad” of once Boris allies entered his office to tell him to leave
  • Nearly 60 Tory MPs have resigned as government minister or assistant
  • Dozens of backseat conservatives withdrew their support for the prime minister
  • Mr Johnson remained defiant at two Commons grillings
  • He faced more accusations surrounding the Chris Pincher scandal

It launched a wave of ministerial resignations that has grown to about 40 Tories so far.

formerly loyal Conservative backbenchers withdrew their support, demanding that the prime minister step down for the good of the party and the country.

Until hours ago, the prime minister defiantly swore to remain in office and even fight to win the next election.

He told the Commons: “The job of a prime minister in difficult circumstances when he has been given a colossal mandate is to keep going — and that’s what I’m going to do.”

But cabinet ministers, including Nadhim Zahawi, Grant Shapps and Simon Hart, took matters into their own hands.

They waited for Mr. Johnson to get back to number 10 and then told him to stop.

Even ultra-loyalist Priti Patel turned to urge the prime minister to throw in the towel after backseat support fell away.

Tory plotters had prepared to take matters into their own hands by changing the 1922 commission rules, but are now waiting for Monday.

Ex-Minister of Health mr javid tried to deal the fatal blow with a blistering resignation speech in the packed House of Commons.

The great beast said: “At some point we have to conclude that enough is enough. I believe that point is now.

“The reset button can only work so many times. You can only turn that machine on and off so many times before you realize something is fundamentally wrong.”

More conservative rebels stabbed him during PMQs and asked if there was anything that would make him resign.

Mr Johnson was elected Prime Minister in 2019 with a wave of optimism and a promise to get Brexit done.

The prime minister has been praised for winning Red Wall seats that have been taken for granted by Labor for too long.
