China has taunted the UK for its hated Brexit legislation, implying that Britain is “determined” to “break” promises.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the transfer of the former British colony of Hong Kong to China, Boris Johnson tweeted: “25 years ago we made a promise to the people of Hong Kong. We intend to keep it.”

In response, the Chinese embassy posted a screenshot of the Tweet in Ireland’s official Twitter account, mocking Mr Johnson.

It wrote: “Two years ago we made a pledge to the Northern Ireland Protocol. We are determined to break it.”
