Brexit news: German ambassador warns EU ready to strike if deal is ignored | politics | News

The German ambassador insisted that the UK agree to renegotiate within the terms of the Brexit protocol rather than try to circumvent the agreement. He said the European Union hopes the British government will suspend the controversial bill for Northern Ireland, and warns of the risks it poses to the country’s international reputation. When asked whether the bloc is ready to retaliate if the UK ignores Brussels’ requests to renegotiate, he stressed that “all options are on the table”.

“It will clearly be seen as a challenge to international law and the rule of law in general,” Berger told Sky News’ Sophy Ridge on Sunday.

“The best that can be done is to go back to legality, and that means let’s negotiate, let’s find technical and practical solutions based on the protocol.

“The European Union is ready to do that, but what we cannot accept is a challenge and a risk to our internal market.

“All options are on the table and I wouldn’t rule out any of them.”

He added: “But really, our appeal, let’s get back to the negotiations. This can be done, it can be solved and it is in the interest of Northern Ireland.”
