man wanted for murder in the UK was detained on an international arrest warrant by Portuguese in May Police.
detectives in Lisbon revealed on Friday that they had detained a man and had been placed in custody pending his expected extradition.
Well-placed police sources in Portugal said the crime he was associated with was a May 1 robbery London which ended with the death of the victim.
The arrest is the third in less than three months in Portugal of a fugitive on the run from British authorities following the arrests in late April and early May of an alleged drug trafficker and murder suspect.
The Policia Judiciaria said in a statement: “A foreign citizen has been located and detained in the Lisbon area pursuant to an international arrest warrant issued by the British judicial authorities.
“The detainee is a 26-year-old man suspected of theft and murder.
“The incident took place in May this year and the man is suspected of robbing and killing a person in the street along with two other people.
“The detainee had ties to Portugal and is said to have traveled to Portugal with his partner who is a Portuguese citizen.
“He was arrested the same day the international arrest warrant was registered by INTERPOL.
“He was remanded in custody after appearing before a judge in Lisbon pending the completion of the extradition proceedings.”
A well-placed source added: “The incident for which the man was arrested took place on May 1 in London.
“Three people robbed a person of an expensive watch and the incident ended with the victim’s death.”
On April 30, one of the other two men was detained at Lisbon airport. Police said he allegedly used the encrypted communications platform EncroChat to distribute Class A drugs in England before fleeing.
Two days later, an alleged killer, described as one of the UK’s ‘most wanted men’, was arrested at an address near the Algarve seaside town of Vilamoura.
According to local reports, Callum Halpin, 27, was detained while walking his dog near his Portuguese shelter.
A public appeal to help track down Halpin was made in January this year when the NCA and Crimestoppers launched a new Most Wanted campaign involving 12 fugitives believed to be hiding in Spain.
Halpin was wanted by Manchester Police for the murder of 31-year-old Luke Graham and the attempted murder of Anton Verigotta.
Graham, a father of two, was ambushed in broad daylight on an Ashton-under-Lyne street and shot dead in a drug war on an Ashton-under-Lyne street, while children played nearby.
In July 2019, five men were convicted of the execution.
Halpin appeared before the Manchester Crown Court in mid-May after he was extradited to the UK and taken into custody. His trial for Mr Graham’s murder was scheduled for October.
