Firefighters were called to Wellington Airport on Friday morning when toasted bread in the Koru Lounge forced an evacuation of the international terminal.

well travel reporter Alan Granville was about to board a flight to Brisbane when he noticed smoke coming out of the living room around 5:40 p.m.

“We were just called to get to the gate and at that moment we could see the smoke in the Koru Lounge and we could smell the toast burning,” Granville said.

Granville said two aircraft carriers were evacuated on the tarmac. Fire services arrived and cleaned the building and the travelers were allowed back into the terminal around 6 p.m.

“It was a great start to the morning,” Granville said.

Phil Rennie of Wellington Airport said there was no fire in the Koru Lounge and confirmed the alarm was activated by smoking burning toast.
