Chelsea are considering plans to demolish Stamford Bridge and build a new £2 billion stadium with a capacity of 60,000.
Talks about a brand new Stamford Bridge began in 2011, when former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was keen to move the club to a larger, more modern stadium to rival the very best in Europe.
However, these plans were eventually shelved after years of setbacks and delays Todd Boehly had been quietly looking to continue the project since taking ownership last year.
It has now been reported that plans have been made to demolish and rebuild the stadium, which has been the home of the Blues since 1905, in a similar fashion to Tottenham’s new ground being built on the White Hart Lane side. built.
Stamford Bridge currently has a capacity of 40,303, making it only the 11th largest football stadium in England, even behind West Ham’s London Stadium, Sunderland’s Stadium of Light and Villa Park.
However, such a rebuild would involve many complications in terms of planning permission, costs and the project’s timetable, although Boehly’s consortium is not worried about money, according to the Daily Mail.
However, the proposed stadium would not be completed until 2030 at the earliest, meaning Chelsea would be forced to move into temporary accommodation for several years when construction started.
And Boehly is said to have already held informal talks with Fulham owner Shahid Khan about using the grounds of their arch-rival, Craven Cottage.
In addition, the FA and the Rugby Football Union have been contacted about whether Wembley or even Twickenham could be used, with a possibility of one of these being used for European matches while Craven Cottage hosts Premier League matches.
In the meantime, Stamford Bridge will host Chelsea’s next home game against Aston Villa on April 1.
