Colorado regulators approve plans to phase out coal by 2031

With a unanimous decision, the Colorado Public Utility Commission (PUC) has approved Xcel’s plans to accelerate the end of coal in the state. Supported by NRDC, the Sierra Club, and other stakeholders, and approved by the PUC with some changes, the renewed reconciliation is a victory for the climate, Xcel customers, and the coal community.

The currently approved plan is to withdraw the Comanche 3 coal-fired power plant in Pueblo, Colorado by January 1, 2031, ending coal in the state. The plan will provide support to affected workers and communities, lay the foundation for the future of clean energy, and reduce Xcel’s Colorado carbon emissions by almost 90%. For more information on the plan, see Noah Long’s blog. Now that the deliberations are over, PUC will announce a written decision next month.
