Much of the Surrey countryside has been closed off by police after a woman in her 20s was bitten to death by a dog.

Another woman was hospitalized and seven dogs recovered at the scene after armed police responded after the attack at 2:45 p.m. yesterday. They had been called to Gravelly Hill in Caterham after reports of a dog attacking members of the public.

This morning the roads around the crime scene were all blocked by police cars as they continued their investigation.

A man on site said: ‘The area is in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by large detached houses.

All roads in the area and surrounding roads are closed. There are police cars with flashing lights blocking the roads. It’s quite a swampy area here, but no one seems to know exactly what happened.’

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: ‘Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of paramedics, a woman in her 20s was pronounced dead at the scene. While formal identification has yet to take place, her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist agents.

A second woman is in hospital for treatment for dog bites. Her condition is not life-threatening. Armed officers, with the support of the National Air Police, arrested a total of seven dogs at the scene and were taken into police custody.

“There are several road closures around Gravelley Hill and officers remain on scene.

Superintendent Alan Sproston added: ‘Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has sadly passed away. This incident will be of concern to the local community and I would like to reassure them that we believe all dogs are registered and in police custody.

“Our investigation to determine the circumstances of the incident is still ongoing and we ask the community not to speculate.”

Claire Coutinho, MP for East Surrey, said: ‘My thoughts are with the loved ones of the lady who died this afternoon following a dog attack in Caterham. Another woman was injured, but is happily recovering in hospital.

“Thank you to the paramedics for their efforts on the scene, and Surrey Police officers who got the situation under control so quickly.”

The owners of dogs who kill someone can face up to 14 years in prison or an unlimited fine or both.

And even if there are no deaths, they could still face five years in prison if it injures someone.
