Cost of living: Devon and Manchester petrol stations offer the cheapest fuel in the UK

Motorists in Devon and Manchester are queuing around the corner after two petrol stations cut the price of their fuel by more than 20 pence per litre.

The petrol stations in Newtown Abbot and Walkden, Greater Manchester have vastly undercut their competitors, saving the average motorist £10 per tank.

Gasoline in Newton Abbot is some of the cheapest in the UK, priced at 164.9 per liter – compared to the national average of 190.65 pence. Diesel sells for 179.9 pence, compared to a national average of 198.42 pence.

The bosses of the Limes gas station in Walkden announced earlier today that they would cut petrol prices to help people during the cost of living crisis. The station currently offers 169.9p for unleaded and 185.9p for diesel – far less than the national average.

Following the announcement, drivers could queue outside the gas station to get to a pump.

Co-director Hassan Mohammed said he was overwhelmed by the reactions.

‘The reactions have been fantastic. All customers were very grateful. It’s been non-stop all day, the pumps have been on all day.

“Some people couldn’t believe what we were doing until they came down and saw it for themselves. We’ve had a lot of people tell us they’re glad it’s not a gimmick of a day and have said they’ll be back again.”

Mr Mohammed said ‘hundreds’ of people have visited the gas station so far today and he expects demand to continue.

“We’ve been blown away, it’s been very busy, but everyone has been so positive about it,” he added. “I’m pretty sure we’ll be busy all week now that more people have heard what we’re doing.”

Earlier today, Mr Mohammed said he hopes to keep prices as low as possible for at least a week and will continue if he can. He said, “My goal is to hold these prices for at least the next week and then, if pricing allows, we’ll try to hold them for as long as possible.”

Mr Mohammed said he chose to cut fuel prices so significantly because he wanted to give something back to the Walkden community at a time when costs for essentials have risen. He said he could have done this by putting his savings back into the company.

He previously said: ‘People’s disposable income is being affected on a massive scale and we know that gasoline is one of the biggest costs for people. We thought we wanted to do something for our community in Walkden. We have been here for seven years now and have always tried to support our community.”

It has the cheapest fuel in the UK, according to the RAC fuel watch – and it was so busy today that an attendant was on hand to guide cars in and out.

Diesel sells for 179.9 pence, compared to a national average of 198.42 pence.

Their price for unleaded petrol has continued to rise – from 153.9 in April 2022 – but is now the cheapest in the UK.

The RAC said: ‘We monitor both wholesale and retail fuel prices on a daily basis, including those in UK supermarkets, and urge retailers to pass on cost savings to motorists whenever possible.’

The RAC believes that this gas station offers the cheapest fuel in the country, although it doesn't make financial sense to travel a long distance to refuel.

The price of fuel in the UK has been investigated by the Competition and Markets authority. In the past 12 months, the price of petrol has increased by 60 pence per liter and 64 pence per liter for diesel.

CMA general counsel Sarah Cardell said: ‘Recent increases in pump prices are a major concern for millions of drivers.

“While we cannot escape global pressures driving fuel prices, the growing gap between the oil price and the wholesale price of petrol and diesel is a cause for concern.

“We now need to get to the bottom of whether there are legitimate reasons for this and, if not, what action can be taken.

“In general, the retail market seems competitive, but there are some areas that deserve further investigation.”

She said the watchdog will “use our formal legal powers” to investigate pump prices, and “will not hesitate to take action” if it finds evidence of “conspiracy or similar misconduct”.

A spokesman for UKPIA, a trade association representing the fuel sector, including refineries, said the review was “conducted urgently” and pledged to “continue to work constructively” with the CMA and the government “to fully understand the issues identified” .

He continued: ‘As the review’s findings show, the UK typically benefits from a competitive domestic supply chain and prices tend to be most affected by changes in crude oil prices and other supply and demand factors, which will be particularly volatile in 2022. goods. .

‘Tax is also a significant cost item, which makes up a large part of the pump price.

“We note that UK petrol and diesel prices, excluding fuel duties and taxes, are consistently among the lowest in Western Europe.”

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “We are delighted to see the CMA recognize that the gap between wholesale and retail prices has widened in recent weeks.

“Regardless of the reasons why wholesale prices are what they are, we continue to believe that there is clear evidence, not least in the past week, that major retailers are incredibly slow to pass on declining wholesale costs, but quick to pass on rising prices.” .

“The idea of allowing drivers to more easily compare pump prices near them could also be beneficial.

“However, the question drivers may have is how long the assessment takes and, crucially, when they see a change in what they pay each time they fill up.”

Jack Cousens, the AA’s road policy chief, said competition on pump prices is “broken” as supermarket fuel retailers no longer drive widespread price cuts by being the first retailers to pass on wholesale cost cuts.

That trigger seems to have disappeared, and now there is a need for another way to reinvigorate competition on pump prices, he said.

“The AA therefore immediately welcomes the CMA’s suggestion for greater transparency in pump prices.”
