Judge Inyang Ekwo of a federal supreme court in Abuja on Wednesday, July 5, authorized former Imo governor Rochas Okorocha to travel to the United States for medical care.
In granting the permission, the judge ordered the court clerk to release the former governor’s traveling passport to him to undertake the medical trip.
The judge’s order followed a request filed by a senior Nigerian lawyer, Mr Ola Olanipekun, who informed the court that his client has been experiencing health problems of late. Olanipekun argued that Okorocha, now a senator representing Imo North in the Senate, will not abuse the order and will return to the country for his trial.
Although the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), represented by Mr Chile Okoroma, had tried vehemently to oppose the request, the commission did not do well when Judge Ekwo explained that the request would be granted subject to the court.
While granting the request, Judge Ekwo Okorocha ordered that the passport be returned to the court clerk no later than three days after his arrival in the country. Judge Ekwo then set aside November 7 for his trial in the money laundering charges filed against him by the federal government.
