Officials have reported 8,395 new cases of Covid-19 in the community and a further 17 deaths in people with the virus.

There are 689 people hospitalized with Covid-19 across the country, 13 of whom are in an intensive care unit or a high-dependency unit, the health ministry said Monday afternoon.

The seven-day moving average of community cases is 9279 – last Monday it was 7053.

All 17 deaths reported Monday had occurred in the past 13 days.

The additional 17 reported deaths bring the total number of publicly reported deaths from Covid-19 to 1,688.

The seven-day moving average of reported deaths is 17.

Of the dead, seven were from the Auckland area, three from Capital & Coast/Hutt, two from Bay of Plenty and one from Northland, Waikato, Taranaki, South Canterbury and Canterbury/West Coast.

Five were in their seventies; five were in their 80s and seven were over 90. Ten were women and seven were men.

In its 1:00 p.m. updates, the Ministry of Health releases a total number of people who have died “with Covid” during a certain period. That doesn’t necessarily mean the virus killed those people, it just means they tested positive within 28 days of their death or immediately after.

The ministry will later provide more information about the cause of these deaths on its website. You can read how this works here.

Hospital admissions were in: Northland: 13; Waitemata: 137; Provinces of Manukau: 49; Auckland: 83; Waikato: 59; Bay of Plenty: 33; Lakes: 10; Hawke’s Bay: 27; Middle Central: 28; Whanganui: 16; Taranaki: 13; Tairawiti: 4; Wairarapa: 11; Capital & Coast/Hutt: 68; Nelson Marlborough: 12; Canterbury/West Coast: 77; South Canterbury: 20; Southern: 29.

The mean age of those in hospital was 64.

The ministry is now collecting vaccination data from tertiary hospital districts: Northland, Auckland, Counties Manukau, Waitematā, Waikato, Capital & Coast, Canterbury and Southern.

Of those hospitalized with Covid-19 whose vaccination status is known, 54 were unvaccinated or ineligible, 82 had received two doses of Covid-19 vaccine and 326 had received a boost.

It is expected that most people in hospital will be vaccinated with Covid-19. This is because more than 95% of the eligible population aged 12 years and older have received two doses.

Officials also reported 280 cases that had recently traveled abroad, and a total of 64,912 active Covid-19 cases across the country as of Monday.

A spokesperson for the health ministry said they are closely monitoring the increase in Covid-19 positive hospital admissions.

“The increase in hospital admissions also highlights the importance of everyone doing the basics right to help New Zealand get through the winter in good shape.”

The ministry spokesman said the spike in hospital admissions was a good reminder to stay home when you’re sick and do the “basics” to protect others.

“Everyone would use a mask where necessary and especially where they can come into contact with vulnerable people – a good rule of thumb is to use a mask in all areas indoors outside your home.”
