The number of new patients in England rose to 847 a day last week, from just 574 a day the week before.

And the number of positive patients in the hospital has risen by a third to 7,024 – the highest in a month.

Cases are also on the rise and Health bosses are afraid of extra pressure on the NHS as the weather running.

Professor Tim Spector, from King’s College Londonsaid: “Clearly we are now seeing a fall wave of Covid-19.

“With rates rising in the vulnerable older age groups, the impact on hospitalizations could be greater than in the June wave.”

Figures from the Office for National Statistics last week showed the number of cases is rising for the first time since July, reaching 928,000 in the UK.

Summer wave peaked at 14,000 Covid patients in hospital, a figure that had fallen by nearly 10,000 by mid-September but is now rising again.

The UK Health Security Agency agreed there are signs Covid bounces back.

dr. Mary Ramsay, UKHSA’s public health director, said: “We are now seeing an increase that could signal the start of the expected winter wave of Covid-19.

“The number of cases is starting to rise and the number of hospital admissions is increasing in the oldest age groups.

“While Covid-19 and flu can be mild infections for many, we must not forget that they can cause serious illness or even death for the most vulnerable.

“Now is the time to boost your protection with a vaccine.”
