Cristiano Ronaldo has thanked English football fans for their support following the death of his son.
In his interview with Piers Morgan, the Manchester United star said: “I never expect that. Never. I now have the opportunity to say, the whole English community, thank you very much for that, [it] kind helped me.
“I also received a letter from the Queen’s family… And it surprised me a lot… That’s why I say: I respect the English community, English people, because they have been very kind to me.
“And at that difficult moment in my life… [the support] was spectacular.
“The way they treated me, me and my family at that difficult moment, I should say directly to the camera: ‘Thank you, to the whole English community who helped me at that moment’.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo also hit back at Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville for their criticism in recent weeks.
He said of Rooney: “I care about the people who like me. I don’t waste time on the people who don’t like me, they are not interested in my life. I like to be surrounded by people who love me, I don’t waste time on people who criticize me.
‘I don’t understand, you should ask him [Rooney]. It’s only been a year, six months since he had his kids here and he invited Cristiano to play football. “I really don’t understand people like that. Or if they want to be on the front page of the newspaper, or if they want a new job or whatever.
“Probably because he ended his career in his 30s and I’m still playing at a high level. I’m not going to say I look better, but I do.”
And about Neville, he added: “People can have their own opinion, but they don’t really know what is going on on the training field or in my life, they have to listen not only to one point of view, but also to mine.
“They’re not my friends, they’re colleagues, we play together, we never go out for dinner, for example. As part of my journey, they criticize me, but I continue my journey.”
