Lady Deborah James was remembered by her You, Me & The Big C podcast co-host after the series won an award last night.
The BBC podcast was honored with the championship award at the British Podcast Awards on London‘s Kennington Park on Saturday night.
It was a bittersweet occasion as it came just weeks later Dame Deborah passed away at the age of 40 after a fight with the gut cancerand days after she was laid to rest at her funeral.
Her co-host and friend Lauren Mahon accepted the honor on behalf of the late campaigner, as well as giving recognition to their fellow host Rachael Bland, who died in 2018 at the age of 40.
The trio had launched the podcast earlier that year to discuss their own battle with cancer and to support others battling the disease and undergoing treatment.
In her acceptance speech, Lauren, 37, said: “Me and Deb were joking when Rachael died that I couldn’t do the podcast alone because I couldn’t call it Me, Me and the Big C.
“The podcast is our happy place. It’s a little surreal standing here without both of my girls. We knew this was a risk that some of us would die if we started it, but we wanted to keep defending it.
‘There is more work to be done. I don’t know what it looks like, but the podcast has always been a service.”
Concluding her talk, the podcaster revealed, “The last time we won these awards, we dedicated the award to Rachael.

Donations also go to ongoing support to raise cancer awareness, such as Bowel Cancer UK’s Never Too Young campaign.
