David Davis hits back at Burley on Mordaunt ”Popular in Scotland and Red Wall’ | Politics | News

David Davis insisted on Penny Mordaunt had the support of a substantial group of Conservative Party members as he pointed in recent polls to his decision to support the former defense minister as the next prime minister. The junior minister of international trade emerged as a surprise frontrunner in the ongoing Tory leadership contest, leading against Rishi Sunak. Mr Davis told Sky News host Kay Burley his candidate is able to secure a place in the final vote thanks to her popularity in both Scotland and the Red Wall, areas whose stakeholders will be influenced by Boris Johnson’s legacy.

Asked how his colleagues will decide who to support, Mr Davis said: “The main thing that affects their votes is the prospect of winning in their own seat, to be bold about it.

“I’d like to tell you it’s a national interest, but it’s a combination of both.

:We’ve been in power for 12 years, it’s going to be tough, so they’re going to pass judgment.

“Will this potential candidate help me win?”
