An accident blocks the right-hand southbound lane on SH20 prior to the Massey Rd exit.

There are major delays on Auckland’s southwestern and southern highways following a two-truck accident and two breakdowns.

A two-truck accident on Auckland’s Southwestern Motorway near the Massey Road exit causes heavy traffic from Onehunga to Papakura.

Police responded to the incident at 1:45 p.m. Friday and advise motorists to avoid the area due to the large crowds.

There are no reports of injuries.

By 3 p.m., the accident was swept off the road and all southbound lanes were open, according to Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency.

However, motorists are asked to be aware of delays while congestion is easing.

By 6pm, Auckland’s southern highway was experiencing long delays after two separate breakdowns at the East Tamaki Rd exit and just after the Papakure exit.

Delays of up to 35 minutes are expected on the highway, Waka Kotahi warned NZTA, and this would last into the evening.

Traffic is busy on every major highway out of Tāmaki Makaurau, while people are on their way to the long weekend.

Auckland’s southern highway is the busiest, with heavy traffic to Papakura.
