Deutsche Telekom expands fiber optic network to 674,000 locations in Munich
Deutsche Telekom has announced plans to significantly improve Munich's digital infrastructure with a major fiber optical expansion. By the end of 2032, the company aims to connect around 674,000 households and businesses in the inner city, in addition to the ongoing expansion in the suburbs. This initiative will bring fibre optic to around one million households in Munich, Telecom said in a statement this week.

Expansion overview

Work is set to begin soon, with an expected 80,000 to 110,000 households in Munich benefiting from the fiber network expansion each year. In total, Telekom plans to provide fiber to around one million households in Munich (FTTH) to the apartment.

The new network offers faster upload and download speeds, lower latency and improved stability, and supports multiple digital activities simultaneously. Telecom said the open access model gives customers the option to choose from different providers, including Vodafone, 1&1 and Telefónica.

Regional impact

Next to Munich, Telecom promotes fibre optic coverage throughout Bavaria. Since 2018, 1.15 million households have been connected, with a further 250,000 households reached through funded projects. More than 300,000 new connections will be added this year alone.

The expansion offers several advantages: higher transmission speeds compared to copper lines, increased reliability, lower energy consumption and higher real estate values. Fiber is considered the best infrastructure for the coming decades, according to the company.
