2FM DJ, TV presenter and comedian Doireann Garrihy was the RTÉ presenter with the most external business activities in the last two years.
Released by RTÉ in response to a request for freedom of information (FOI), ecords show that Garrihy was licensed by the line manager for 21 external jobs between January 2020 and February this year.
Last May, the BBC introduced a public register that requires current operations and sports broadcasters to disclose details of external jobs quarterly and show whether the value of a job exceeds £ 5,000. did.
A register was brought in to increase public confidence in the presenter’s independence. However, RTÉ does not have such a requirement.
Due to data protection concerns, the Irish broadcaster’s 2012 proposal to require all current presenters to register their commerce relationships has been withdrawn.
Miriam O’Callahan, with 1 star on RTÉ Radio Prime time Presenters have conducted 42 external engagements over the last two years. Almost all of these were philanthropic or altruistic events.
Garrihy has been granted permission by his boss to participate in 18 individual corporate campaigns and 3 charitable events.
Her clients include McDonald’s, Aussie Hair Care Products, Dub, Sentra, Flahaban, Tan Cream Vita Liberata, Disney and Bank of Ireland. She is represented by NK Management, which takes care of many major Irish TV and radio stars.
Garrihy has 285,000 followers on Instagram, 81,500 on Facebook, and 68,000 on Twitter. Many of her corporate gigs approved by RTÉ have required her to post about her corporate account on her social media accounts.
The work of the Horse Racing Ireland, approved by RTÉ earlier this year, required 2FMDJs to attend the Horse Racing Festivals in Leopardstown and Cheltenham. The Horse Racing Ireland has posted a video of Garrihy’s interview at the festival on his YouTube account.
2FM Entertainment Reporter Lottie Ryan has been approved for work by 12 companies. Her clients include The Sims Fertility Clinic, One4All Voucher, Bank of Ireland, Smith Toy, Emma Mattress, Dub and Toyota. Ryan, who has 86,000 Instagram followers, also received a reward from Diageo to run a “Christmas Cocktail Making Campaign” on her social media.
Audrey Carville, Morning Ireland The radio host who recently deleted their Twitter account approved three external jobs. These included his role as a moderator at the Health Summit, the chair of a conference hosted by the Royal Society of Surgeons, and the chair of the Ireland Future Conference last November.
Carville was also paid by the Government’s Shared Island Initiative, which hosts an online forum with Foreign Minister Simon Coveny on March 25, last year. However, this job was not listed in the approved events released under FOI. RTÉ said there was “no record” of Carville’s request to host a shared island event.
The presenter did not answer the question as to whether she asked for approval of the job. According to RTÉ sources, if the presenter does not ask for permission before taking on an outside job, the presenter’s line manager will handle it.
RTÉ’s top presenter, Ryan Tablidy, was granted permission last December for the “Christmas Storytime Event for Banking Staff and Their Children.” RTÉ did not reveal the name of the bank as a “private event.”
Tubridy was also allowed to turn on the Christmas lights at The Shelbourne Hotel and participate in the launch of the St. Vincent and the Gale Christmas campaign.
The current clerical presenter who has undertaken a commercial job is Sarah Makinani, Drive time Presenter who was the MC of the Electric Ireland virtual event in January last year. She was also the MC for an event at the Irish Hospital Consultants Association.
Philip Voucher Hayes chaired the Environmental Protection Agency, UCC, DCU, and National Organic Training Skillnet events. Fran McNulty, Prime time Presenter, chaired one agricultural financial event.
Soccer commentator Darag Maloney has been licensed to host seven separate sport-related events.
Operation transformation Presenter Kathryn Thomas has been allowed to do nine outside jobs for clients, including Revive Active, Riddle, KPMG, Royal Cunnin, Brennan’s Bread, and Tesco.
Claire Burn was allowed to engage in 14 external engagements, all philanthropic or altruistic. Brian Dobson, Nicky Byrne, George Hamilton and Jennifer Zamparelli all reported zero outside work.
Radio moderator Brendan O’Connor has been granted permission for two charitable events.
RTÉ said in a statement: “Every individual in RTÉ must seek approval from management in order to engage in external work. Such work requests are evaluated by management on a case-by-case basis. A record of all requests is maintained, but there is no centralized registration that covers the entire organization. “
