The Israeli military said it has wiped out two senior Hamas leaders in a precision airstrike in Rafah – just hours after the terror group launched an attack on Tel Aviv.
Yassin Rabia, head of the West Bank headquarters and senior member of the Khaled Najjar unit, was killed in an attack in Tel Sultan – an area in Rafah full of thousands of displaced civilians.
The IDF said it had struck a Hamas complex in Rafah, which had recently been controlled by “key Hamas terrorists”.
It added: “The attack was carried out against legitimate targets under international law, using precise munitions and on the basis of accurate intelligence indicating Hamas use of the area.”
Rabia, the senior leader killed in the airstrikes, led “all Hamas terror activities” in the area, the IDF claims.
He is also said to have carried out multiple attacks on the armed forces, resulting in the deaths of Israeli troops.
Najjar, who allegedly managed funds for Hamas in Rafah, also carried out several attacks on civilians and the IDF between 2001 and 2003, it is alleged.
Although the IDF says the attack was carried out based on “precision intelligence,” the attack has so far killed at least 35 civilians and injured dozens of others.
“The IDF is aware of reports indicating that as a result of the attack and the fire that was ignited, several civilians in the area suffered harm. The incident is currently under investigation,” the military said in a statement.
Hamas has condemned the attack on what it said was “an area full of hundreds of thousands of displaced people”.
Most of the dead were women and children, the Hamas-led Gaza Health Ministry claimed.
Thousands of people are said to have sought refuge in the western part of Rafah after escaping from the eastern flanks of the city where the The IDF began its ground invasion two weeks ago.
The strike came just hours after Hamas launched a chilling barrage of rocket attacks on Israel for the first time in months, forcing civilians to flee their homes.
Loud rocket sirens sounded Tel Aviv after eight missiles were said to have been launched Gaza with photos of famous Israelis Iron dome intercept some of them in mid-air.
Israel's impressive Iron Dome technology was seen in action for the first time since December when they foiled the missiles from the sky.
The mobile, all-weather air defense system managed to shoot down a number of missiles.
The dome consists of rocket batteries shaped like giant matchboxes and tilted toward Gaza.
The impressive Iron Dome was only set up to detect rockets heading towards densely populated areas in Israel, such as Tel Aviv or Jerusalem.
Hamas announced it was targeting Israel's largest city, saying: “We fired a large salvo at Tel Aviv in response to the Zionist massacres of civilians.”
It is thought that the barrage of missiles came from the city of Rafa where Israel has continuously bombarded in the hope of ending the war bloody war.
Just a few days ago, Israel was told to immediately cease its activities in Rafaha southern part of the Gaza Strip where countless Palestinians are sheltering.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has said that the humanitarian crisis in Rafa had “further deteriorated”, while the situation was now “disastrous”.
ICJ President Nawaf Salam said: “Israel must immediately halt its military offensive.”
The global court accused Israel of limiting aid to Gazawhat they deny.
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan had requested arrest warrants against the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for alleged war crimes in the Strip.
Hamas leaders were also involved in the requests for international arrest warrants.
The attack on Rafah in recent weeks comes as the IDF seeks to hunt down and destroy the last remnants of Hamas so the war can be over.
Israel says the city is Hamas's last major stronghold in the Gaza Strip.
They have been “eliminating terrorists” and “terrorist infrastructure” while hundreds of 'terrorist targets' have already been hit.
Repeated air raids have also been underway since early May, during which three “important” tunnel shafts have also been found.
Military tanks surrounded the entire eastern half of the refugee-filled city as the planned attack began.
It is believed that the remaining hostages are still being held underground in the web of Hamas hideouts.
Israel has claimed that around 120 hostages are still trapped in Rafah as pressure mounts to finally rescue them after more than 230 days.
They include young girls and the elderly.
