Residents said the man screamed and threatened on Darlington Street and surrounding roads.

He then walked towards St. George’s Primary School with a ‘cleaver’, according to witnesses, before parents and passers-by wrestled him to the ground.

One man, who intervened during the confrontation with the armed suspect, said: ‘I saw him walking towards the school with a meat cleaver.

“He made verbal threats, the boys surrounded him and then they cornered him and someone wrestled him to the ground.

“He’s been busy all day, but never in my life did I think he would go to school with a cleaver.”

Another parent, who was the first to call the police, said, “We were waiting for an accident. Today he sounded very sad and used foul language all day long. He just sounded incredibly upset and sad throughout the day.

“You could hear and see him from the backyard, brandishing knives. My husband who works from home ran down the stairs and said he goes to school at the front with a meat chopper and I was just on the phone to speak to the police right away and talk to them till they got here .

“The teachers acted very quickly and got everyone in the school hall, three men tried to calm him down but he was very, very excited and then he went further inside and then it was seven men watching what he was doing and then one of them even wrestled him to the ground.

“He was very upset. If he’d had one of those kids, it would’ve been horrible.”

A parent who also heard the man ‘scream’ during the day said: ‘When I went to pick up my child, we were put in the hallway and the children were in their class. We were there for an hour or so.’

The parents who wrestled the suspect to the ground were hailed as ‘heroes’. One wrote: ‘Thank you so much for protecting my children. You are heroes.” Another added: “Thank you to everyone involved, especially the heroes who risked their own lives to help.”

A GMP spokesperson said: ‘Around 3.10pm on Friday 15th July, we received a call with reports of a man with a blade knife at a primary school in Darlington Street, Tyldesley. Officers arrived and a man has been arrested.’
