Drinking champagne with Tory donors just hours after announcing a tax cut for bankers and the wealthy was likely a mistake, the chancellor admitted yesterday.
Quasi Quarteng said he “gets what it looks like” after it turned out he had a drink with financiers and leaders of hedge funds on the day of the mini budget.
And he added that “in hindsight it probably wasn’t the best day to go” to the Tory party event.
But he was only there 15 minutes and the event had been scheduled for “several weeks,” he said.
He told LBC Radio: “I think I spent 15 minutes there, or maybe a little longer.
“It was a party event, we have party events all the time.
“I think it was a difficult conversation and I totally understand what it looks like.
“I just feel like it was something I was signed up for and had to do.”
He acknowledged that “in hindsight it probably wasn’t the best day to go”.
