Ebonyi declares support for Ekweremadu, says it traces family of kidney donor

The Ebonyi state government has said it stands with entangled former Senate Deputy President Ike Ekweremadu amid allegations of organ harvesting.

Recall that on Thursday, June 23, London Metropolitan Police arrested Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, and charged in court for allegedly bringing a child to the UK for organ harvesting. According to police, the investigation was launched after detectives were notified in May 2022 of possible offenses under modern slavery legislation.

Ekweremadu and his wife were subsequently detained until July 7 pending further investigation.

In a letter sent to the British High Commissioner, Ekweremadu called for support for the “donor” listed as Ukpo Nwamini David to obtain a visa. Ekweremadu said in the letter that Ukpo was undergoing “medical examinations for a kidney donation to Ms Sonia Ekweremadu”.

In a statement released on Sunday, June 26, Ebonyi State Commissioner for Information Uchenna Orji said the state was following the turn of events and making efforts to contact Ukpo’s family members, who are from the state.

“While we urge the British Government to act progressively and carefully and to look critically at the intent (human rea) and thoughts of the detained family and please give them the benefit of the doubt, we urge the public, especially those with shades of opinions. and surge of anxiety to stay calm as we hope to see light at the end of the tunnel.

The state government is reaching out to the family of David Okemini Ukpo of Ebonyi State, whose information to the UK Metropolitan Authority has orchestrated the criminal charge against the leading senator and his wife.
