Conor Benn and Eddie Hearn have rejected suggestions that a historic showdown with Chris Eubank Jr has been agreed for later this year.
Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Snr shared one of British boxing’s greatest rivalries as they fought in two blistering matches in 1990 and 1993.
Their sons are now looking to replicate their world title successes with 25-year-old Benn in hopes of lifting himself up in the welterweight world title fight after a sensational last 18 months. Eubank Jr, meanwhile, is campaigning at middleweight with his own title in his sights.
While the two have been chasing world titles in various divisions, there has been growing speculation that a catchweight bout will continue later this year.
However, Benn’s promoter Hearn insists the reports that the fight has been sealed are false.
“Everyone assumes he’s fighting Eubank,” Hearn said IFL TV†
“There are no negotiations, we are not close to a Eubank fight. That battle is always huge. I’m talking to Kalle [Sauerland, Eubank’s promoter] this week, but our focus is on other fights.
“I’m not saying we wouldn’t engage in that fight. But it’s not close or on the horizon.’
21-0 Benn has been linked to fights against former world champions Keith Thurman, Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner for his next fight.
But the Ilford man has also downplayed talk of the Eubank Jr fight, pointing to recent speculation that he would be shooting Mikey Garcia, who announced his retirement from boxing earlier this month.
When asked if he will fight Eubank Jr next time, Benn said, “Not that I know of, no.
“I swear I saw that people were adamant that I was fighting Mikey Garcia. Where did they get it from?’
Eubank Jr, 32-2, is coming off the back of a comprehensive win over Liam Williams in February.
