Edinburgh fire: Firefighter Barry Martin dies after Jenner’s fire | UK | News

A firefighter died in hospital after last week in the former Jenners department store in Edinburgh, police have confirmed. On Monday, January 23, 2023 at around 11:35 a.m., the police arrived on scene to report Scottish and rescue service after a fire in the building.

A firefighter was taken by ambulance to Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary where he died on Friday 27 January.

It was 38-year-old Barry Martin, from Fife.

Mr Martin, who was based in Edinburgh, had been in critical condition at Edinburgh’s Royal Infirmary since the fire.

A police officer was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation and was later released.

At its peak, 22 fire engines were dispatched to the Rose Street site, with more than 100 firefighters battling the blaze, which was reported at about 11:30 a.m.

Witnesses saw how a soot-covered firefighter was helped out of the building by colleagues.

Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland, tweeted: “This is terribly sad news. My deepest condolences go out to Barry’s family, friends and colleagues.

“This is a terrible tragedy for all who loved him – but also a reminder of the selfless courage our firefighters show every day in the line of duty.”
