Efforts at the Apple North Carolina campus continue to evolve at a glacial pace

The campus will be located near Raleigh, North Carolina

Local utility companies are poised to enter the site of Apple's future campus in North Carolina, but the company doesn't seem particularly motivated to complete the project quickly.

The campus was rumored to be like this already in 2018but announced in April 2021. Since then, a little bit of Apple has invested in the project, instead of the expected big and fast leaps.

And there still doesn't seem to be much urgency on Apple's part to get this done. A new report names local utility giants that are standing by, but ultimately waiting for Apple to act.

a report on Monday via a local news channel WTVD quotes a Wake County spokesperson on stormwater management. The province completed the assessment of the location in early 2024.

Apple reportedly hasn't heard anything yet. Until that is the case, the approval process cannot move forward.

In addition, Duke Energy says the main power lines have been installed. Full alignment awaits structures that simply aren't there, and no ground has been broken.

Paperwork obtained by the news outlet says Apple will begin construction in 2026. This is in contrast to the Austin, Texas location. After a 2018 Announcement of a second campus in the area, the company broke ground within a month of signing the deal.

The proposed Triangle campus will span 281 acres when completed. It includes commercial offices, a parking deck, streets and a central utility.

The campus, built on four parcels of undeveloped forest near Cary and Morrisville, is expected to cost $552 million. Apple has requested about 700,000 square feet for office space, another 190,000 square feet for support structures and almost 3,000 square feet for parking.

Six buildings will be constructed in the first phase of construction, with more structures possibly added in the future.

In May 2023, a collection of site plans was submitted to Wake County, including the inclusion of a map.

Apple has committed to employing at least 2,700 people on campus within the next decade, which is expected to eventually increase to 3,000. From 2021Apple leases an office building on the MetLife campus in Cary.

It's not clear how many employees Apple currently has in the state. The company currently leases office space and its leasing targets are not dependent on the location being built.

The company already operates a data center in the state, has solar farms and several Apple Stores.
