Last night’s trip to the Dales featured a new storyline featuring Dawn Taylor and her late best friend.
ITV viewers have been frustrated by Emmerdale bosses, accusing them of being obsessed with drug and alcohol plots.
Olivia Bromley‘s Dawn Taylor got the shock of her life on a recent episode of the Yorkshire soap when she found out her best friend Beth had died of an overdose.
On Thursday’s episode, she attended the funeral and went back to her friend Jade’s house before tripping on Beth’s daughter, Clemmie.
Clearly neglected and sleeping in a dog bed, Clemmie apparently had no idea her mother had passed away.
Dawn immediately realized Clemmie was in danger when a drugged Jade was in the other room next to a menacing man.
She decided to take the young girl home and an exchange of money ensued between her and Jade.
Back in the village, Dawn had to explain it to her husband Billy Fletcher (played by Jay Kontzlea) what had happened while he remained convinced that Clemmie’s best option would be social services.
Billy eventually agreed to let Clemmie spend the night with them while Leyla Cavanagh’s (Roxy Witness) coke addiction remains a problemelsewhere in the Dales.
While the new storyline probably touched the hearts of many, it also irritated some viewers.
These turned to social media to express their thoughts, after feeling familiar when the usual warning for disturbing scenes finally taken off the air.
They complained about soap bosses not being able to let go of drugs as a common theme in their storylines.
“How many times has there been no talk tonight about drugs? Jeez Lousie!”, one tweeted.
A second viewer continued: “Does every story have to be about drink or drugs? Come on writers, you can do so much better.”
Another said: “Is there anyone in Emmerdale who doesn’t use drugs or alcohol?”

“This show is really obsessed with drugs! Oh and booze. Any other addiction too – So boring now,” a fourth fan chimed in while another wrote: “I wouldn’t be surprised if that kid was hiding drugs, the writers seem so screwed up .”
Although Clemmie and Dawn’s story is just beginning, Leyla’s cocaine story is slowly coming to an end.
In recent scenes, her boyfriend Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough) was overtaken by her lies as her connection to Holly Barton… who also succumbed to an overdose in 2016 – came to light.
Suzy was dumped by her partner Vanessa Woodfield.
But when she chance to get out of Leyla because she owned the coke found in Take A Vow, near Jai Sharma’s property, Suzy kept her secret.
Could this backfire on the wedding planner?
