England have the chance to win a first major tournament when they face each other Germany in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley on Sunday.

Home support will be on the side of the Lionesses and also a wave of confidence after a sensational build-up to this point of Sarina Wiegman‘s side.

They only conceded once the entire tournament and a dominant 4-0 semi-final victory over Sweden proved that the front line shoots well. Beth Mead has six goals to her name, while Alessia Russo has four despite starting every game on the bench.

England have reached the final of a European Championship twice in the past, in 1984 and 2009. Both times they fell to the last hurdle.

That is in stark contrast to the eight European titles Germany has to their name – only twice since 1987 have they not been in the final. Like Mead, Alexandra Popp has found the back of the net six times and the pair will compete for the Golden Boot.

Like England, Germany has so far won all of their matches at Euro 2022 and are heading to Wembley with the full conviction that they can spoil the Lionesses’ party.

Date, start time and location

England vs Germany is scheduled for a start time of 5pm BST on Sunday, July 31, 2022.

Wembley Stadium in London will host the final.

England vs Germany team news

Once again, Wiegman’s confidence in her starting eleven is tested. Russo continues to shine off the bench and while that has led to calls for her to replace Ellen White on the team, the Lionesses could choose to keep her in that super sub role.

Keira Walsh went out late against Sweden with a cramp but is expected to be good to start again, while Rachel Daly is likely to get the nod to left back over Alex Greenwood.

Germany apparently suffered no injury problems in their semi-final win over France.

The big concern for them will be Klara Buhl, who missed that match with Covid. She will have to show a negative test in the coming days if she wants to appear at Wembley.

England vs Germany Prediction

The Lionesses go from strength to strength and have shown no signs of being affected by the added pressure to host the tournament.

Confidence flows through the camp and even when the starting squad struggles, there is so much power in the depths to wait in reverse and so far no team has been able to live with England’s substitutes.

Germany have only conceded one goal in the entire tournament and have the experience to perform on the biggest podium time and again, so it’s unlikely that this is the kind of comfortable victory England have won against Norway and Sweden.

But Wiegman has transformed the mentality of the side – they are ready to go to the extreme.

A 2-0 England win.
