Erik ten Hag tore in his Manchester United players, who describe their performance in a 4-0 loss against Brentford as ‘nonsense’.

The Dutchman was forced to apologize to the club’s fans just two games into his tenure after a loss that left United bottom of the rankings after another catastrophic display.

United conceded four goals for the first time in the first 35 minutes of a Premier League game, while Ten Hag is the first Red Devils manager to lose his first two games in a century.

Asked to explain the capitulation of the first half, the former Ajax boss said: ‘It’s pretty clear it’s bullshit, it’s poor and we need higher standards than that and it’s clear.

“I can bring up several things, but those seem like excuses. And that’s not there in the top that we have to deliver and we haven’t done that.

“We have to change that’s pretty clear we have to start both games better we have to stick to the plan and from the first start we have to engage and we didn’t

“You start the game and you make individual mistakes, but you make sure that one mistake can happen, but a second, third mistake is not acceptable. Players need to know that.

‘There is always pressure. I know I have to analyze and find solutions, that’s my job.’

In a subsequent interview, Ten Hag, meanwhile, emphasized that it was the players who had to take the defeat, while claiming to be surprised by the seriousness of the loss.

He said, ‘Difficult for me and a surprise. The team has to take responsibility and I feel sorry for the fans, we have let them down.”
