Eufy doesn’t patch cameras, it just warns users about cloud usage

Eufy doesn’t address a potential security issue in the Eufy Security app, but instead just tells users that their thumbnails will be uploaded to the cloud when they choose specific notification settings in the app.

In response, Eufy has added a statement to their App Store listing and in the Eufy Security app that reveals when the cloud service is enabled when users choose a specific notification option.

The Eufy Security app has a few different options for notifications. For example, users can choose to display text-only notifications or to display text and a thumbnail image from the camera. If the user selects the thumbnail option, Eufy uploads the image to the cloud.

As noticed by ZDnetthe problem isn’t that Eufy uploaded images to the cloud, it was that it failed to inform users it was doing so.

For those who own a Eufy security camera and do not want their data uploaded to the cloud, we recommend that you change your notification type in the Eufy Security app to most efficient, rather than Full effect or Includes thumbnail.

The company has yet to address the issue of allowing Eufy camera streams to be viewed live using an app such as VLC. The streams are not encrypted and can be accessed without authentication.

This isn’t Eufy’s first security issue, either. In May 2021, users of Eufy cameras discovered that cameras were owned by other users were to be viewed in their app rather than what they expected to see from their own cameras, and settings could be changed by those with fake access.
