Microsoft’s release schedule for the Xbox Series X and S is getting busier, but what’s coming out when?
Microsoft’s 2022 took a bit of a hit when it was forced to slow down both Starfield and Redfall to next year, and certain major releases were disappointingly absent from his June showcase†
Still, it’s not lacking in third-party support, and there are a few upcoming first party games to keep fans sated until the bigger releases in 2023 follow.
the acquisition of Bethesdaand possibly Activision Blizzard, has also helped fill the schedules, even if the latter’s games aren’t meant to be exclusive to the Xbox platform.
Although Sony has God Of War Ragnarök this year, it only has a handful other games announcedwhile Microsoft is in the opposite position where it doesn’t have many major titles this year, but otherwise has a large number of games.
Just like we did with Sony and Nintendo, we’ll run through all the major first and third releases that we know will be coming to Xbox in the coming months. Though that doesn’t mean it won’t come back…
When dusk falls
Although it is being developed by an independent studio, it is being published by Xbox Game Studios, making this story-driven adventure game the next exclusive main game for the console. We’re still not sold on the graphic novel-inspired visuals, but we’re curious how it will stack up against the likes of Life Is Strange when it launches on July 19.
grounded
Obsidian Entertainment’s Honey, I Shrunk The Kids inspired survival game has been in early access since 2020, but the full release is now confirmed to arrive in September. It will have the full campaign and probably twice as many spiders.
A Plague Tale: Requiem
The sequel to 2019 A plague story: innocencethis is a cross-platform title, but Microsoft clearly has a special deal with it as it was announced during the company’s E3 2021 presentation and saw a second trailer at this year’s showcase. It will be released October 18.
contempt
This survival horror game with visuals influenced by HR Giger’s work fell off the map after that the unveiling of 2020but it’s now slated for an Xbox exclusive release on October 21. Definitely one for those who like disturbing images that would make most other people sick.
High in life
Announced at last month’s Xbox showcase, the first person shooter High On Life is not only exclusive, but will be released on October 25 in a few months. seems to have a similar style of humor as you wield live alien weapons.
repent
This one leaked last year, but the June showcase marked our first look at Pentiment, and it was one of the most visually unique games of the bunch. A smaller budget title from Obsidian, it’s a murder mystery role-playing adventure and is slated for a November release.
Diablo 4
Diablo 4, one of two prominent Activision games to be featured in the June showcase, is slated for 2023. It wasn’t confirmed at the showcase, but it remains multiplatform despite the Microsoft buyout, as Blizzard releases the wants to win back favor from fans mad at the microtransactions-laden Diablo Immortal†
Overwatch 2
The second Activision game from the June showcase, Overwatch 2, isn’t exclusive to Xbox either, which makes sense when you consider how much of the first game’s player base is spread across multiple platforms. It is currently available in beta, with the full release coming October 4 as a free-to-play title.
Forza Motorsport
We’re still not sure why Microsoft seems to be rebooting Forza Motorsportinstead of just calling it Forza Motorsport 8, we can confidently say that next year’s entry may feature the best graphics on the Xbox Series X/S.
STALKER 2: Heart of Chernobyl
If it wasn’t for the war between Russia and Ukraine, STALKER 2 would be out this December† While the war is still going on and developer GSC Game World continues to raise awareness of it, it is resumed development and the game is now slated for 2023.
redfall
Originally one of Microsoft’s main games for the end of 2022, this co-op vampire shooter from Arkane will now arrive in the first half of 2023. We got to see a new trailer during the June showcase, which demonstrated the co-op gameplay and rather annoying cast of characters. Hopefully they are a bit tighter in the final release.
starfield
Starfield’s delay was a much bigger blow to Microsoft, considering it’s Bethesda’s next major release. Thankfully, fans were treated to plenty of new gameplay footage and the promise of over 1,000 planets to explore when it launches next year.
confess
One of the many absentees from the June showcase, the fantasy game Avoved has had no updates since its 2020 announcement. This is probably because developer Obsidian is working on both Grounded and Pentiment. Aside from its imaginative setting, we know little else about it, but it looks a lot like Skyrim.
smuggled goods
Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios has an Xbox exclusive in the works called Contraband. Like Avoved, all we need to do is continue with a vague, pre-rendered trailer and its description of “a smuggler’s paradise set in the fictional world of 1970s Bayan.”
The Elder Scrolls 6
The Elder Scrolls 6 is likely years away from release, with Bethesda’s Todd Howard recently admitting it still in pre-production† While it lacks formal release platforms, comments from Phil Spencer strongly point out that it is an Xbox exclusive – despite Howard’s own comments On the contrary.
everwild
Rare made an appearance at the June showcase with a new update for Sea Of Thieves, but there was no word on Everwild. Despite announced in 2019we still couldn’t tell you what kind of game it is and insider reports describe a incredibly messy development cycle†
fable
The big Fable reboot from Forza Horizon studio Playground Games is apparently going well despite the assumptions of some fans. However, its absence from the June showcase means we can rule out a surprise launch in 2022.
Indiana Jones
With a new movie coming out next year, Bethesda and MachineGames must plan to have their Indiana Jones game launch around the same time, even if it’s not a direct link. Still, the game wasn’t even mentioned at the June showcase, with the only recent information being a rumor that it will not be Xbox exclusive†
The Outer Worlds 2
Obsidian really has a lot on his plate, doesn’t he? Even the teaser trailer of last year was self-conscious enough to know that the announcement was way too early. The Outer Worlds 2 was originally slated for release this year, but now it’s not clear when it’s coming out, or if it’ll be an Xbox exclusive, given Microsoft now has the publishing rights†
Perfect Dark
Although announced a while ago, the chances of the Perfect Dark reboot coming out soon are practically nil. This can be attributed to the supposedly troubled development; half of the staff at studio The Initiative have left and it sounds like Crystal Dynamics has practically taken over. Hardly a good look as this is supposed to be The Initiative’s first game.
Hideo Kojima’s Game
After so many rumours, Hideo Kojima eventually admitted that he is working with Microsoft on an Xbox game, a game that will leverage Microsoft’s cloud technology. Although Kojima doesn’t talk about it, his identity as… survival horror game Overdose may have been leaked beforehand.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2
Despite getting a new trailer at The Game Awards last year, Hellblade 2 was another absentee exclusively on the June showcase. While there’s no denying that it has phenomenal visuals, many were unimpressed upon the initial gameplay reveal. All we know is that it will launch for Xbox Series X/S and PC, so no Xbox One version.
