Carlos Sainz Jr. won the first pole position in his F1 career in a wet qualifying session at the British Grand Prix.
Ferrari drivers raised Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to the pole in just 0.072 seconds, while Charles Leclerc’s other Ferraris were third.
In a very tight and tense qualifying session, it rained just minutes before the start of the session and the conditions around Silverstone Circuit changed every few laps.
With the Mercedes Duoser, all three British drivers are in the top ten Lewis Hamilton and George Russell delight home fans in 5th and 8th, and McLaren’s Lando Norris in 6th.
Sainz Jr. looked quick throughout the season, but unlucky enough to make the most of his 27-year-old machine, the Spaniards eventually made it to the pole at his 150th race start. I felt joy in Spain.
“Thanks to everyone in the crowd for staying here in this rain,” he told Sky Sports.
“We Spanish suffer a little more rain, but I know you’re used to it!
“It was a good lap, but I had a lot of trouble with the water standing on the racing line. It was very easy to lose control and lose the lap. Also, putting the temperature on the tires under these conditions. Was more difficult.
“In the end, I put together a lap that I didn’t think was special, but I was a little surprised at Paul’s position.”
Verstappen looks quick in every qualifying and championship leaders are a favorite to win the race on Sunday, but Sainz Jr. is confident that he will win and claim his first F1 career victory.
He added: You should be in a good position to grab the lead.
“I’m sure Max and Charles will put a lot of pressure on them. [on me] Of course, I will do my best. ”
