Balancing supply and demand on the electric grid with electric vehicles in Boulder, Colorado

Charlottesville, Virginia — Fermata Energy, This innovative V2X pilot program transforms parked electric vehicles into mobile energy units, increasing grid resiliency and reducing utility bill costs while supporting underserved communities and local businesses.

Fermata Energy's intelligent bi-directional charging platform, combined with four (4) FE-20 chargers and two (2) Nissan LEAFs from Colorado CarShare, will demonstrate the untapped potential of V2X and Vehicle-to-Building (V2B) technology. When an electric vehicle is parked and in V2X mode, the Fermata Energy platform uses the vehicle's battery energy to offset and reduce peak demand in the building. Fermata Energy's Demand Charge Management (DCM) software intelligence manages total system power and energy through charging speed, frequency and depth, while intelligently maintaining the vehicle's battery health. This technology is designed to optimize customer value by limiting peak demand in buildings while maintaining the range required for the expected operating cycle of electric vehicles.

“We are on the cusp of a transformative era in energy management, where electric vehicles will transcend their traditional transportation roles and play a critical role in increasing the resilience and sustainability of the electric grid,” said Tony Posawatz, CEO of Fermata Energy. “This partnership with Xcel Energy is more than a project; it is a blueprint for a viable global renewable energy ecosystem.”

“This program will help bring the benefits of electric vehicles to all customers in the communities we serve, including non-electric and non-electric customers. This project is a proof of concept of bi-directional charging to assess technology with the potential to increase savings on customers' bills,” said Huma Seth, Director of Clean Transportation at Xcel Energy. “We know that EVs can help customers save money on their transportation costs and deliver cleaner air for everyone because they are powered by increasingly cleaner electricity.

In addition to these latest implementations, Fermata Energy's V2X impact is notable. Since December 2020 the City of Boulder has deployed Fermata Energy's V2B technology at the North Boulder Recreation Center, delivering savings on energy costs and strengthening the city's commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. The Alliance Center launched a V2B project with Colorado CarShare, highlighting the synergy of electric car sharing and network technology to effectively address climate change in one of Denver's historic buildings. Fermata Energy also launched a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) affordable multifamily housing pilot program to increase affordable access to electric vehicles for low-income drivers in Boston. The collaboration between Fermata Energy, Xcel Energy, City of Boulder, Colorado CarShare and Boulder Housing Partners demonstrates a practical application to scale the deployment of V2X technology across electric vehicles with the energy grid for improved resilience and efficiency.
