FIFA allocates 26% of the 2022 World Cup budget, $440 million in prize money

The world’s football governing body, FIFA, has set aside $1,696 billion for this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

The organization says it has set aside about $440 million or 26% of its World Cup budget for prize money, which will be the bulk of the tournament’s allocations.

The figure represents a 10% increase in allocation over 2018 figures.

The prize money guarantees each of the 32 entrants a minimum of $9 million. That means 16 teams exiting the group stage will share $144 million of the prize pool.

Also, 8 teams that drop out in the second round will each take home $13 million, a total of $104 million.

Four teams will compete at the quarter-final level, each with $17 million.

The fourth-placed team earns $25 million, while the second runner earns $27 million. Finally, the tournament’s winning team will receive $42 million and the runner-up $30 million. In addition to these bonuses, they also get $1.5 million each for their preparation costs.

Operational costs will make up the second largest share of FIFA’s budget in Qatar 2022. These amount to $324 million or 19% of the spending of $1,696 billion, according to FIFA.

FIFA also announced that more than 5 billion people will watch the tournament this year. Therefore, it has reserved 15% of the money for its television audience, which is $247 million.
